Rotary 3180 District Conference

We were privileged to attend the annual District Conference for Rotary 3180 January 9-10, 2010 at Madikeri, a beautiful town nestled high into the slopes of the mountains. The cool temperatures were welcomed and so were the familiar faces of Rotarians from all of the cities we’d visited thusfar. In a sea of 4,000, we felt we were among friends.

Soon after we arrived, we heard our friends from Karkala call out to us as we passed through the crowd. Our happy meeting was doubly blessed by the packages they handed Melanie and me. In Karkala, our hosts Ashe Hegde and Rajeshwari Achar took us to a fabric shop just before we left to select fabric for sarees. Mrs. Achar took our measurements and sewed beautiful sarees for us over the next week. Summer had a gorgeous saree from her hosts in Karkala and the three of us made quite a stir. We would have been helpless in dressing ourselves if not for the help of Rtn. Eulalia D’Souza from Mangalore who arrived early morning to help us dress. Soon our friends from Karkala showed up with necklaces to match our sarees. I was truly touched to have such sweet and generous friends. Thank You!

The cultural programs and speeches were very good.  Our GSE group debuted our team video presentation for an audience of about 2,000 and spoke from the heart, briefly, about our impressions of India.  We also had an opportunity to spend time with the outgoing GSE team who will come to Georgia in April.  We are looking forward to meeting them again and seeing their impressions of the US.
